Bangalore IT.com sets sights on generating $250 million business

Bangalore,
October 28, 2002

The Bangalore IT.Com 2002 conference-cum-show commencing here on Monday, with a special focus on BPO (business process outsourcing), e-governance and banking and finance sectors, is expected to generate business worth $250 million. Though the fifth edition of the event lack the presence of any international celebrities from the ICT (information and communications technology) sector, industry leaders and people connected with the sector here felt that the relevance of such events had not diminished due to the slowdown in the industry.

Nasscom regional director Poornima Shenoy said, "IT.Com definitely gives visibility to the companies based in Bangalore and helps in showcasing Karnataka as an IT destination. As long as the event can serve this purpose, it is relevant." The event also provides an opportunity to other states to have first-hand experience of Bangalore's success in emerging as a key player in software services exports, she added.

"It provides a platform for policy makers, industry leaders and other stakeholders to exchange ideas and networking opportunities. I think it is a laudable fact that Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and the IT department of Karnataka have been conducting the event successfully for the past many years," Shenoy said.

STPI (Bangalore) director BV Naidu and state IT secretary Vivek Kulkarni also emphasised the need for organising such events despite a general downturn in the economy and doubts regarding its true value. The importance of the event is evident from the fact that the President of India had agreed to inaugurate it, they pointed out.

Naidu said this year's event was expected to be much bigger than last year's with increased interest levels from players in the emerging sectors, especially IT enabled services. The thrust is on organising more events within the main show, he said.

Separate and specific one-on-one meetings for teams visiting from different countries will also be a main feature of IT.COM, he added.

Nearly 250 participants from across the world (17 countries and 11 states) were expected to take part in the five-day event. Interestingly, the banking and financing services segment related conference sessions are drawing the attention of banks which plan to come up with unique ways to build their customer base while at the event. So much so that delegates registering for IT Strategies for Banking and Finance sessions will even get a free gold credit card and a no-balance required account from ICICI Bank.

President APJ Abdul Kalam will inaugurate the event and will also provide a touch of serious academics by delivering a lecture to 1200 students at the Student Internet World being organised at the sidelines of the main event.
